The 2014 Meeker County ‘Gardeners Gala’ will be held on Tuesday, March 18th 2014 at the Litchfield High School. Registration, visiting booths and vendors, and demonstrations begin at 5:00.
The keynote speakers for the ‘Gardeners Gala’ are Carrie Hanten Larson and Jayne Roberts. Carrie Hanten Larson will be presenting on “2014 the Year of Color: Bold New Annuals”. Carrie is currently employed with McHutchison out of River Falls, Wisconsin. Jayne Roberts will be presenting on presenting on “Work Horse Perennials & New Ones, Too”. Jayne has devoted her professional life as a sales representative in the Midwest for Walters Gardens, Inc. of Zeeland, Michigan.
Nathan Winter, Meeker and McLeod County Extension Educator will present on "Trees & Shrubs for Central Minnesota”, Connie Karstens will present on “Growing & Using a Healing Garden”, Paul White will present on “Beekeeping 101”, and John Meyer will present on “Gladiolus – Growing, Showing, and Giving”.
Registration is $10 for advance tickets and $12 at the door. Pre-registration is due by Monday, March 10th at the Meeker County Extension Office. The 12th Annual "Let's Get Growing" Pine County Horticulture Day will be held Saturday, March 22, 2014, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Pine City High School in Pine City. Keynote Speaker: Gary Johnson. Keynote Topic: "The Teeming Life Beneath Our Feet - How Healthy, Living Plants Rely on Healthy Living Soil." Breakout Sessions Include: All American Selections and Top Performing Annual Flowers, Square Foot Gardening, Tree Owner's Manual for Basic Maintenance and Repairs, and Root Vegetables. Stearns County's Gardening Education Day (formerly Horticulture Ed Day) will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at St. John's University (located near St. Cloud). A wide variety of topics such as: Water Wisely, Preserving Your Harvest, Lawn Rehabilitation 101, Gardening Lessons I Learned the Hard Way, Evolving Echinacea - A Look at Recent Developments, as well as many more will be offered through break-out sessions. The Douglas County Master Gardeners invite you to "Let's Get Growing" on Saturday, March 29 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Alexandria Technical & Community College Office & Information Technology Center. Enjoy this excellent presentation of speakers covering a variety of topic sessions to please all levels of gardeners and check out all the vendors and their displays.
Pre-registration is $ 30 by March 19 or $ 35 at the door. Registration includes refreshments, lunch and sessions.
This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Mark Seeley who joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota Department of Soil, Water and Climate in 1978. Since that time, he has served as Extension Climatologist and Meteorologist, working closely with the National Weather Service, the Minnesota State Climatology Office and various state agencies, as well as regional Extension Offices around the state. He has served as a weekly commentator on Minnesota Public Radio's MORNING EDITION news program and written a weekly newsletter "Minnesota WeatherTalk" since 1992. He is also a frequent guest on Minnesota Public Television's "Almanac" program. Dr. Seeley has edited numerous childrens books on weather and climate, and he is the author of MINNESOTA WEATHER ALMANAC published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press, which was nominated for a Minnesota Book Award in 2006.

2014 Horticulture Education Day

Come join in the fun of gardening at McLeod County Master Gardener Horticulture Education Day. This year the horticulture day will be on Saturday, March 29th at the Days Inn Victorian Inn. The event will run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Julie Weisenhorn, Assistant Professor, Department of Horticultural Science at the University of Minnesota will present on "Right Plant, Right Place, Right Purpose! Plant Selection for Sustainable Landscapes”. Julie directed the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener Program from 2007-2013. She teaches workshops and presents on horticultural topics with a special focus on plant selection and sustainable landscape design.
John Ball, Professor of Forestry at South Dakota State University Extension will present on “Selecting Trees for Today’s Challenging Conditions”. Dr. Ball currently serves SDSU Extension as a resident forestry specialist. He also serves as a campus arborist and as the forest health specialist for the South Dakota Department of Agriculture.
Nathan Winter, McLeod/Meeker County Extension Educator will present on “Good, Bad, and Ugly Plants and Insects”. Nathan provides education in the agricultural and horticultural areas and helps provide resources and technical service to the public.
Rob Blair, Professor of Fisheries, Wildlife, & Conservation Biology, University of Minnesota will present on “How to Create a Pesticide Free Backyard for Birds”. His fields of interest include ecology of human-dominated landscapes, birds as indicators of ecological integrity, conservation of native species, and environmental education.
